JAXA and Mitsubishi have successfully tested designed to validate what could be the future of Space Based Solar Power.
Elon Musk has this interesting (and very negative) view about space solar power.
The Japanese talk like this because tragic historical events have made nuclear power impopular. They will never beam down any solar power to Earth, it’s just empty talk. If they actually did it, they would find out that it too works like a city destroying weapon…
Power beams aren’t very useful on Earth because of the atmosphere and bypassers we don’t want to cook. This isn’t new physics, it is undeveloped only because of the lack of meaningful Earthly applications. But it’s great for use in space! A beaming power station on an eternally sunlit summit at a lunar pole could power rovers in the shadows below it, without the impracticalities of building an electric grid with cables.
